Thursday Thoughts Ed. 97 - Thoughts become habits. Take charge.
Happy Thursday -- I've been thinking a
lot about thoughts lately, so here we go. Thanks, DH for helping me sort
thought it all.
Thoughts
Become Habits.
What we think, our thoughts create
feelings and beliefs. These in turn determine how we act (or don’t act in many
ways. Our actions create results which impact our thoughts. So in the end, it's
our thoughts that go around and around creating our reality of feelings,
actions and results.
Repeating thoughts are habits in a
sense, or actually beliefs, which drive us to repeat our behaviors over and
over. Some habits are good; some, not so much. You know the difference and
that’s why you try to change ‘em.
One way we try to change is by sticking
a wedge someplace in the middle of this cycle, avoiding the thoughts that
started the whole thing. Truth is, the first thought – the one that’s really
stuck -is hard to nail down.
It’s understandable why we can't seem
to identify what we’re really thinking in the first place. If your brain has
been sending the same message (thought) for years and years, you likely think
it's the truth and don’t question it. After years of enduring the cycles, it’s
easy to feel powerless to change, that it’s "just they way it is".
Sure, thoughts are just thoughts but
thoughts have power in them. Making poor food choices, eating too much junk,
eating without thinking, time and time again, are actions spawned by thoughts
and beliefs we haven't really looked at for years! We act the same and see the
same results. Who would doubt the “truth” of it?
Taking a moment to consider what your
big old brain is doing to you gives you the chance to choose which direction
your thoughts actually take you. Pausing to recognize old thoughts (habits) is
the first step; making a decision to notice them before moving is the next
step. By recapturing that feeling that you’re in action to get new results, you
can change the end of the story!
So, write a different story. Start now.
Begin by being mindful of what you do. Yes, it takes work. Our brains are hard
wired to pick the easiest path - the dominant neural connection, the cycle that
has been engrained. Mindfulness of your thoughts will help you being making new
ones (ones that you like better) which will in turn begin to weaken the old
ways and forge bright, shiny new ones from which to grow. And don’t be
surprised when these new thoughts create new feelings and different actions and
finally the results you want!
There’s almost nothing to change except
a few crazy ideas that you’ve let become your best friend and constant
companion.
Changing thoughts will change your
habits. Changing habits changes your life.
Here to help,
Remy
