Balance

Balance. The word comes up a lot these days. There is much importance in having it - it seems. Work/Life balance. Body in balance. What I'm starting to realize is that balance, or being balanced isn't actually a place or state we ever truly reach.  If something were to be in complete balance it wouldn't be moving.  What's the fun in that?! Balance is something, instead, that we constantly strieve for.  A little more on this side, a little less on this side.  Gently or drastically shifting the weights in our lives to steady the flux.  This feels good. And then a gigantic rock drops on one side!  We gather our strength and we move things around to come back to "home".  A strong core, or center of the body, torso and abdomen allow the entire body to remain upright and solid while being tossed this way and that.  We train clients to strengthen this part of the body first in order to maintain good posture and keep the whole body working most efficiently and effectively.  It is critical.  In our daily lives seeking balance is also a must-do.  I spent this first week of work deeply involved in the task at hand: customer service, gaining clients, writing, reading and focused on success.  This weekend came and I felt ready and willing to put the day planner and to-do list aside.  Knowing I had done all I could do and done it as best as I could let me put away the running shoes and slide into flip-flops and bask in the summer sun.

Plan to be less stressed

A cool and comforting Spring breeze blows while I get myself ready for bed.  Curling up early tonight to wake ready and rested for my first official day training at Northwest Women's Fitness. Getting plenty of sleep is critical for me to fully function, make good decisions and do it with a smile:) I am actually looking forward to exploring the early morning - a part of the day I rarely see - and still have time in the afternoon and evening.  Whatever will I accomplish?! What an exciting way to start the Summer!

Happily, I met my healthy goals for the day.  Amped up my cardio with a hour of sweaty spinning this morning, worked out with a client this afternoon and eeked out a 5 mile jog before dinner.  I sometimes find it hard to return to good eating habits after a holiday weekend away (especially with the left-over cookies in the cupboard)  Planning  is definitely key.  I grilled a chicken breast last night and split it in two - one half made a great lunch wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla with salsa and spinach.  The other topped my dinner salad, with feta, spicy almonds, strawberry slices and balsamic dressing, Yum!  And so easy.

I've got a plan for tomorrow and just knowing that helps me keep organized and focused on all the other things I've got to do.  Funny but true, sometimes a little planning makes going with flow that much easier!

Long Weekend!

What a glorious Memorial Weekend here in the Northwest! We drove up to the Washington coast through parts of the country I had never seen.  Spectacular scenery!  We spent our days on the beach and returned to our campground in the evenings.  We cooked fresh crab and mussels and devoured our supplies of chips and salsa.  Andrew surfs but I don't so I felt a strong urge to get some exercise of my own.  So, I suited up and enjoyed a peaceful and invigorating run along the beach.  Felt great!  These long, festive weekends can be hard on a healthy lifestyle.  Everyone seems to bring chips! (And then S'mores!) I definitely consumed more sweets and treats than I usually do and moved my body a whole lot less.  The challenge is to allow yourself to relax and enjoy the fun, the food and the people around you without totally derailing your good habits.  And what a challenge it is. My tactic before heading out of town was to pack lots of fruits and veggies and my running shoes. Having these with me allows for some control over what goes in my body and a good old run whenever I feel like it.  My tactic today is to set a healthy and realistic plan for the week.  Load up on tasty greens and lean proteins, lay off the sweets and treats.  Kick up the cardio!  The summer is just beginning and I plan to love every minute of it!

Another beautiful day here in Portland, OR. You can feel a buzz in the air with the upcoming long weekend. I woke up without a workout plan and a lack of motivation.  Took some advice from Sherri's blog and implemented Circuit Day.  What a great way to beat boredom and keep the heart rate up! I feel great after a good hour-long session.  I always feel better after breaking a sweat and pushing myself just a little more than I thought I would.  So much great weather and sunshine got me on my bike for an afternoon climb up Mt. Tabor.  I combined my ride with a bit of guerilla marketing by posting flyers for our upcoming Outdoor Bootcamp program on cars along the way.  It was so much fun I think I'll do it again tomorrow:) After a lovely, simple dinner with Andrew and some quality couch time I am looking forward to sinking into bed with a good book.  Until tomorrow then.

A new career deserves its very own, brand-spanking new blog.  Our lives are such wild adventures, tossing us this way and then that way,  like a roller-coaster with eye-widening highs and deep belly-flipping troughs. I find myself beginning again and am welcoming the challenge.  I learned to swim and to ski as a child growing up in rural Maine. Through high-school and into college I was a competitive athlete in a love-hate relationship with exercise.  The work felt so hard but the reward was so great. I could never give it up!  I enjoy exercising both in and out of the gym and writing articles on strength training, nutrition and healthy, happy living.  I love helping others put the puzzle pieces together to create their best lives.  Manifest the Best!  This year came with monumental events: I married my best friend and soul-mate and followed my heart to a career as a health and fitness professional. With fear and excitement I launch into these endeavours and I am driven to document the moments.  I welcome you to join me as I record what I learn along the way and hope against hope you will learn something too.
